program and project management planning; tracking and controlling;

This book is neither an easy read nor an exciting read. It is, however, an important book. Kesner approaches IT from the perspective of the Project Office and it is here that the phrases “Return On Investment,” “estimates,” “on-schedule,” and “on-budget” have real meaning. The Project Office is the business side of the house where positive and significant outcomes from technology spending are anticipated. Business managers expect measurable returns on their growing investment in IT even as they continue to request and fund ever more complex and risk-laden IT projects.

Kesner has written neither an IT book, nor a strategic planning book but rather a much needed practitioner’s handbook that provides simple, deployable frameworks, practical tools, and proven best practices for successful IT serve and project delivery management. Each tool and approach described in the text is wrapped in the context of its application in the field. In addition, there is an accompanying document library on the Web site that includes both actual templates and examples of completed forms. By using these companions to the text, the reader is shown how The Hands-On Project Office may be adapted and applied directly to her/his own management situations.

In summary, this book provides immediately implementable solutions to IT personnel faced with the day-to-day management of large, complex projects.
